WHAT WE DO

Promotion of Rural Development

The objective of this component is to build the capacity of 2-3 local NGOs to deliver basic human needs services to communities in Nampula province.

COCAMO has chosen three of the more experienced NGOs active in the province. One is AMASI. AMASI (Associacao dos Educadores de Agua) specialises in empowering community groups to repair and maintain their own water wells. The second one is SALAMA. SALAMA's core competency lies in mobilising community groups to conduct preventive health and reproductive education campaigns. The third is the Caixa das Mulheres de Nampula. The Caixa provides savings and credit opportunities to women in the province. These organisations receive funding for capital and running costs, training, on-the-job mentoring and accompaniment. While our support is tailored to the specific needs of each organisation, it does tend to stress assistance in institutional and operational capacity building in the areas of;

  • needs assessments
  • project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
  • strategic planning processes
  • decision-making structures and methods
  • administration and financial management

By the end of three years we anticipate two to three local NGOs effective and responsive to their communities will emerge. They will have effective project management systems in place and their work will have a positive impact on improving quality of life in the areas of water and sanitation, health and the creation of savings and loans opportunities.
